Gritstone Trail

Postby Jon » Sat Feb 26, 2005 4:09 pm

Has anyone run/walked the Gritstone Trail? I would be interested to hear from anyone interested in doing this route (especially to gauge interest)? The trail is approx 18.5 miles and runs between Lyme Park and Rushton Spencer.

Definitely up for it - and hopefully this will stir some interest in the forums - I, like most I guess, have taken a look & seen they aren't used very much and not bothered to post any new threads, I have often wished they were more active though - I just wish I didn't sit in full view of the rest of the office!

Cheers

Gritstone Trail

Postby Colin Ardron » Wed Mar 02, 2005 6:19 pm

Jon asks "has anyone run the Gritstone Trail"? I could do no better than refer him to Pete Nolan's article of edition No 2 (April-June 1984) of the Macclesfield Harrier's Magazine. Since there may be some problems in tracking this down I will re-cap salient facts.
It was actually a combination of the Gritstone and Mow Cop Trails a total distance of 30 miles which they completed in sometimes blizzard condtions on Tuesday 3rd January 1984 in a time of 6hrs 1 minute which included a break of 15 mins at Teggs Nose.
Peter ran with John Kershaw from Mow Cop and they finished at Poynton Station. The splits were:
Mow Cop to Bosley Cloud - 6 miles; 1.05
Bosley Cloud to Croker Hill - 14 miles; 2.33
Croker Hill to Teggs Nose - 19 m; 3.39
Teggs to White Nancy - 22 m; 4.18
White N to Bowstones - 26 m; 5.15
Bowstones to Poynton Stn. 30; 6.01

I once ran the Gritstone Trail in summer on my own as a training run in a time of approx. 3.5 hrs. Quite enjoyable. I hope you all have a splendid day out.

Have no idea if I'll (be allowed to ) do the Gritstone trail, but thought it might be a way of letting Jon know my email address, but come to think of it I've not ticked that box on registration so its acgray63@hotmail.com Ta
PS the ankle is going some interesting colours
PPS mention Macc in some title so it doesn't get lost in the porn (junk mail, naturally)

Hi Paul,

You are welcome to join us. Are you running on a Mon/Tue/Wed or Thursday night with the Harriers? I will have a definite date in a couple of week’s time. It is likely to be on a Sunday in early June.

Regards

Gritstone trail

Postby Pete Nolan » Sun Apr 03, 2005 9:57 pm

As you can probably gather, John Kershaw and I had several goes at the Gritstone Trail, not all successful. We always included the Mow Cop section as it is a more aestheticly pleasing route.

I remember two winter attempts, one ending in a pub in Bollington where I had several pints and then rang Jill for a lift home. Another winter epic was saved by us taking it in turns to sit under the hand-dryer in the men's toilet at Teggs Nose Visitors Centre.

The most memorable moment was when we finished one hot summer's day at Bowstones at 2.45pm in the days when pubs used to close bang on 3pm. We sprinted down through Lyme Park to the Boars Head to arrive 30secs late and were refused a drink. We then ran round Poynton for another half an hour trying to find one of John's relations who was at home to give us a drink and a lift back to Macc.

Would love to have another go, but a bit slower now, please.

Dear All,

The Gritstone Trail run/walk will be on Sunday 5th June 2005. Sorry to those of you who would have liked to have taken part - but couldn’t on this day. I had to pick the most appropriate day for the majority. Please pass this on if you know of anyone who is interested.

I will have more info soon

Gritstone Trail

Postby Colin Ardron » Sun Jun 05, 2005 9:18 pm

Thanks Jon for suggesting the idea of doing the Gritstone Trail! Us old 'uns can sometimes get into ourselves and think, "humph, done that years ago"! but in the event it was a splendid day out and I'm sure it did us all good. Thanks to Adrian for manning the drinks station at Teggs Nose. I'm not sure he knew who half of these old buffers were who drank his drinks but good on you anyway.
Now I love these low key, non-competitive events but come on girls, what was your real time? Knackered at the finish (but gently revived by copious cups of tea), is what one expects but to see the girls turning the corner to finish only five minutes after ourselves! Why, Alan nearly choked on his cake. Then to be told that they had done it in 3.5hrs!!! We were elated (for the girls) and deflated (for ourselves) in equal measure.

No really I'm joking (why am I hopeless at lying), - you all did well .... I did well, Johnny did well, Alan and Jim did well. What is certain is that John Kershaw did well in doing the driving for us .. thanks John.

Maybe another similiar run later in the year .... ideas???

Thanks Colin,

Seems everyone enjoyed the day, the weather turned out to be pretty good too. Adrian did a grand job with the drinks station (a choice too!). So thanks to everyone who took park and hope we can do the same next year.

Cheers
