London Marathon 2006

Postby david tucker » Sat Jan 07, 2006 1:20 am

Here's an attempt to balance the forum usage away from just coming from the fell runners so here is an enquiry to see if the London Marathon can stimulate any worthwhile submissions to the site. I'm pleased to be in this year via a club entry so let yourself be known if as a Macc Harrier you are also joining in for a trip round London on the 23rd April.

Perhaps someone could respond to Sophie's query about the FLM in the "general section"....

Im a London reject

Im looking at either Rotterdam (April) or Berlin (Sept) to run sub 3hrs. If i do that i'l get automatic entry to London next year.

It'll be hard watching London on television this year after being part of it the past four years.

I want to get under 3hrs on the London course, 3.05 my best so far

What time's are the Macc runners hoping for?

Some good shots of Tim Stock at 12.39ish on the BBC 1 coverage this morning and a brief shot of Martin Platt? about 30 secs after.

Both looking strong!

A good time had by all on Sunday at london? Perfect sunny day for registration on Saturday then nice and cool and damp for the race. Perfect conditions. Although I have to say, I agree with Gebrselassie when he said the slippery surface disturbs your balance so I deliberately dodged the many hazardous manhole covers to avoid slipping feet. I only saw Tim and Martin on the race. They cruised pass me at 2 and 3 miles on the way to sub 3 hour times.
Disappointed not to get under 3.15 for auto entry next year but the wheels fell off at 18 miles. Nice of the organisers to put me in the 50 catergory but I've phoned them to correct it to 55.
Special thanks for all the training days from Sue Rowson on the track on Tuesdays and to John for organising saturday runs.

My head gardner is indisposed at this time so has asked me to pass on his hearty congratulations on resting the o/55 club marathon record from his grubby hands. Just think how much faster you would have run if only you had gone on the turnip soup regime.

Hello

For some reason I am not down as a Macc Harrier in the London Marathon results - but I am and I did do it! 3hrs 43mins 48 secs. Maybe because I went via a charity and perhaps I forgot to say that I was in an athletics club?

Anyway, well done to everyone, it was a brilliant day!

London Marathon Diary – Better late than never!

Postby Jon » Mon May 01, 2006 4:16 pm

Friday 21st April.
On arriving in London (after a flight and two train journeys) we caught two more trains to take us to the exhibition and registration. This pretty much takes up the day!

10am Saturday 22nd
It’s a worryingly warm day. We decide to go on a site seeing tour of the route. At Greenwich, we came across a bloke in a suit of armour pulling a dragon, he was there for a tabloids photo shoot, with sweat dripping down his forehead he conquered about 10 yards - you’d think 26 miles would be right out of the question!

5am Sunday 23rd
At breakfast there was no porridge? hotel staff backed down after majority of runners refused to eat the greasy fry-up on offer.

7:30am met up with Jane Hodgkinson at Blackheath station, bumped into Dave Jackson in the warm up area and briefly spotted Dave Tucker in the Tea Tent. Drank loads of Lucozade.
8:30am No option of blaming the weather for a poor performance – just started raining, perfect for runners not so good for spectators.

9:45am My starting zone is empty, they have gone without me!!!

Started with a few walks – first mile 9:08, second Mile 8:30 10k reached in 48 minutes and ended up with a first half marathon of 1:39 a little disappointed with but spurred me on to keep building up my speed, I finally got to 20 miles with a ‘Do-able 10k’ in sight. With great relief I entered Bird Cage Walk, I knew I was going to be close to the ‘Good For Age’ limit and finished the right side of 3:15 (with 15 seconds to spare).

Legs very wobbly and feeling light headed I came across Dave Tucker who had just achieved a new Harriers club record.

My Jane crossed the finishing line in 4:18 as I was shuffling up there to watch her, finishing minutes ahead of her target time.

To sum up, it was a great day, excellent support and all helped by good preparation (I big thanks to Sue Rowson for the track training). I finally had that first beer.

Jon :D
