Boxing Day 08 Handicap Road Race

Postby Beneficial Dictator » Thu Dec 11, 2008 8:09 pm

The usual Boxing Day handicap road race will take place starting from near the chapel in Langley village. The slowest runners will go off starting at 11.00am ish. The event is open to all club members & their invited guests. You can run as solos or pairs in fact you can dio whatever you like. The course will be marked & is pretty obvious just keep turning left at every opportunity !.
Event registration will be from 10.15am at the St. Dunstans PH. Faster runners late arriving ( ie. after the first runners have gone off ) should go straight to the start.
The event is FREE & there are NO PRIZES ( as last year ) so please don't bring anything.
Post run drinks will be available in the pub & their will be some free food.

IMPORTANT :To assure a reasonable handicap time you must either post a reply here or email craigharwood.run-climb@hotmail.co.uk to tell us you intend to run. Do not leave it any later than Xmas Eve lunchtime as I have better things to do from then on !.
Otherwise be warned you will receive a horrendous start time possibly 5 minutes after the winner has finished. I am exaggerating but again I warn you only slightly !.

Anyone not intending to run who could come & help at the finish would be most welcome. It doesn't involve much but can be hectic at the peak finishing time period of around 10 mins when most runners finish. You would need to arrive by 11.45 at latest.

Merry Xmas.
Craig.

Craig

Is there a lower age limit? Thought I'd run round with Saam (aged 6) - pl. can we have a handicap that means we won't be last in the pub!

In reply to Digby above.
There is no lower age limit as long as those below, say age 13 or so runners are accompanied. For example, Lydia Hatton easily completed last year ( with Mum ) at age 7 & a young Macfadyen also gave dad a run for his money out sprinting him at the finish. Im sure there have been plenty of other young turks completing over the years. The course is from memory about 3.5 miles but I'm sure someone will tell us the exact stats, distance & climb.
Handicap will be generous ( a 12 year old girl finished 2nd overall last year ).

Craig - I'll be running.

The course is probably better described as a country 4 miles with climb up to the Hanging Gate PH. Not trying to put anyone off.....but probably best to know what you or the kids are letting yourselves in for beforehand.

Hello
Adrian (Kirk; not a Macc harrier) and I would like to run together please. We both ran last year but can't remember our times. We will be running with our dog so won't be a fast one.

Thanks

Well done all who took place in the annual Boxing Day Handicap, I hope you enjoyed it. The weather was perfect for a post-turkey run and as ever there were some good performances from club members.

It was great to see some of the younger members out, with particular mention giong to Ellie Emery, Grace Hatton and Saam Harris (especially for his sprint to thrash his dad over the last 50 m).

I'm afraid I'm still perfecting the handicapping as you will see from the results below!! I'm clearly far too soft and will be taking advice from the master fell handicapper, Mr Cheek, for next year's race.....you have been warned and will need realllllly good excuses for a good time next time

The winner of the Handicap race was Alison Hartop. Fastest time of the day went to Declan Murray in a fine time of 22:21. Fastest lady was Sarah Harris in 25:01. The most improved runners were Delan Murray, with a 35% improvement over 2007 (did you walk round last year or was your turkey laced with EPO?) Aslo, notably improved were Grace Hatton (18%) and Dawn Nelson (14%).

Well done all.

A big thanks also goes to Craig Harwood, Bob Lynch and Trevor Longman for all their help with the organisation.
