Blast from the past: the first time I did this race I got a lift with John Amies in his (at the time) top of the range Datsun coupe or something. I was generously (or so I thought) offered the front seat by the Congleton Harriers travelling with us. Many folk had lifts with John but none more than once. We got there from Congleton (about 55 ml down random country lanes) in about an hour: I was a gibbering idiot by the time we arrived (which was about half an hour before the organiser did, and 2 hours before the race started) and the race was a doddle in comparison to the journey there, except for the fear of the return journey to come (especially as the race in them days started from a social club, so a couple of pints before the return journey was de rigeur) - I was contemplating walking home.
I understand John now rides mountain bikes with the same 'panache' as he drives. Perhaps Elf and safety has something to be said after all.
Good luck everyone !
