Maytime Scampero - Orienteering, Wed 24 May

Postby Brian J » Mon May 01, 2017 4:03 pm

The Maytime Scamper-O orienteering event is at Gradbach! - Public Car Park (GR998662).
Evening Orienteering 90 min Score Event. Mass Start at 7pm. Registration from 6.15pm.
Similar format to previous years with the innovation of maps and questionnaires on waterproof paper (old hands will still bring plastic bags though). Ideal for all abilities. Just do as much as you like at your own speed but get back within 90 mins, or you start losing all the points you have gained. Juniors welcome but compete with an adult.
90 minute limit compared to 2 hours in 2014 at Gradbach. There's no chance of getting all of the controls in 90 mins, so getting the strategy right at the start will be more important than usual. I might give you a few minutes after issuing the maps before letting you set off.
Weather looks set fair but bring a waterproof cag in addition to a pen or pencil and compass.
Entry fee? - There may be a modest charge levied, or request for a donation to club funds (still to be decided).
Enter as individual, pairs or threes.
Afterwards – in the Rose and Crown for post mortem and + The Legendary Prizegiving where the prizes will be even more lavish than usual. Augmented this year by John Mooney having recently rifled through his kitchen cupboards.
Food - The Rose and Crown serve food but may be finished taking orders by the we arrive. Best to ring 01260 227 232 and put your orders in before 8.30pm or call in and place your order before the event.
We should have more than enough maps available if we've guessed right, but please post or let me know if you want to take part and haven't done so already.

Fantastic - It's worth running your tripe out just to get a prized prize!

On the other hand, I am delighted that it is not in half-term, so I can do it :D

I'll be along: and if you are planning to come (or know someone who does), please post on here, many thanks, so we have about the right number of maps: though there should be a few spare.

Count me in Brian. I am trying to recall the Scampero in that area from a few years back and wished I had noted down all the numbers, do I could submit my answers and retire to the pub by 7pm....

Ii's not about the prizes!

Postby John Mooney » Sun May 07, 2017 6:20 pm

As second-in-charge of the prizes for this year's Scampero I confirm that the prizes will be even more lavish than usual. Older and wiser orienteers please note. This year there will be an inaugural V70 prize of a technical t-shirt (L) in a fetching shade of crimson. For male, female, transgender or Lauren Jeska. Will Colin Ardron return to fitness to contest this I wonder? Or could a backwoodsman turn up to push The Old Man of Tytherington for this award?

Brian - I will be there and the Facebook 'event' (the dark side) has 6 other names showing as attending as well (with an additional 10 names showing as 'interested' which is not too helpful).

Many thanks for your meticulous hard work to create this navigational masterclass.

Last call for maps.... I have about 20 folk so far, and will bring a few spare, but if a whole gang of you turn up without letting me know then you might have to run without a map.... which for some may not in fact be a handicap.

- it's open to all, fast or slow, you can walk if you want and don't have to stay out for the full duration.

Cheers Julian
