Snowdon Mountain Race

Postby Welsh Harrier (MC) » Wed Mar 07, 2007 8:59 pm

Some of you will remember watching the highlights of the Snowdon Mountain Race in our living room last year. I seem to remember that one or two of you even mentioned that you'd like to give it a go!!
Well organised race, 5 miles up 5 miles down, field of 400 plus and while it does have its share of detractors (I get blisters every time I run it) it's worth doing at least once in a lifetime (because it's there!?) This year it's on 28th July.
The reason I've put this up is because I heard from the organiser at the weekend that he anticipates that it'll be full up in the next 2 or 3 weeks so get your entries in. Details at www.snowdonrace.com

Did this race several times in the early 90's. It has a great sense of occasion, draws quite a crowd of spectators and an internationaly flavoured field of competitors. Its great to watch the leaders doing sub 4 minute miles descending as you stagger ever upward ( its an out & back course ). I would suggest you run it in roads shoes, its either stoney track or tarmac all the way and studs for grip is not really an issue. For the descent some cushioning beyond the thin sole of fell shoes is desirable otherwise you will have very bruised feet.

- worth bearing in mind, though, that they've demolished the cafe (and the train station!) at the summit, so you don't get a cup of tea before you start the descent.

Just thought you should know.

Good fun up and down Snowdon yesterday. Met up with Larry and Dave W. and I ended up in the hospital tent - did get a pb though and I know for a fact I was 1st V55.

results are now at www.raceahead.net and should be some photos around soon.

' I ended up in the hospital tent '

Races don't come with a better recommendation than that.

Well done Martin.

I loved it. The only place on the downhill that I could get going. It was nice to meet you Dave.
