Today Phil Cheek (supported by Neil Gunn) organised a 'Basic Navigation Skills' Course based at Common Barn Farm and the Goyt Valley.

12 eager participants arrived fully kitted up armed with compass and map. After copious quantities of tea and cake they went into classroom and field based exercises learning about maps, compasses, basic navigation, bearings, line featuresand much more. After a picnic lunch we all headed off to the Goyt Valley to tackle a challenging 'mountain marathon' style course intended to test their new found skills. The group was split into pairs with each pair supported by a more experienced navigator from the fell section (thanks to Phil C, Neil Gunn, Matt L, Andy Skelhorn, Mike G, Nancy Bunyan).

Everybody got around the course and they were rewarded with more cake. There are a few pictures on FLICKR.

All in all a grand day out.

Really enjoyed taking Tony and Mark round Phil's course. Hope they both managed their respective races today reasonably well.
best wishes, Mike G
