One Mile Championship

Postby burb » Tue May 28, 2013 9:48 pm

I've noticed a few other clubs run an annual one mile championship.

Is this something we do / could do?

Could be fun! :D

Would that be uphill (the killer mile) Rob? It takes me 3 miles to warm up.

cheers Barry

We could do that Barry... but I was thinking of a nice flat track!

Hi Rob - how would you see this working?

Who is it targeted at, what is needed to make it work etc? Perhaps this is something that you could bring along to the committee sometime?

It would be for all abilities, perhaps setting off in groups of 4 or 5 with individual times recorded.

A mile is meant to be the best way to predict other races times and as it's a short distance it's ideal for all ages.

Perhaps the word Championship should be just 'Time Trial' - but it could be considered a way of recording a PB at this distance and trying to better it each year.

Are you suggesting this as a one-off event at the track or as part of something else?

Thanks for being proactive!

An annual one off track-event is how I saw it? Perhaps followed with cakes and tea. :)

We could go up to the next distance of 5K - or perhaps use Parkrun as part of a championship like some other clubs do?

I am not sure when the next meeting of the road running group leaders is planned for but maybe this is an idea you could bring along? One thing to think about is how each group (A, B, C, D, Beginner) would benefit from it and feel included.

If I hear about the next meeting I will let you know.

Cheers - I'd personally ask runners to estimate their time and group runners accordingly. The first event would be all about setting yourself a target, then each year see how you've improved. More of a personal challenge complete with a bit of friendly competition for the Roger Bannisters amongst us!

Happy to attend any meetings to discuss.

Could potentially do this as part of the Marathon Talk Magic Mile, details here: http://www.marathontalk.com/challenges/magic_mile.php

This allows you to gender and age grade times to give a fairer comparison.

Cheers,

An excellent idea and I hope it happens. I would be prepared to give it a go on the condition that they don't lock the gates to the track before I finish. Cakes sounds good too.

Cheers Mark, I've recently heard about the Marathon Talk idea and I know that Steve Webb (Congleton Harriers / Parkrun) is now planning a Dream Mile around Astbury Mere in early September to coincide with this. I'll share details when I know more.

It would also be great to host our own inter track event.

How could we move this forward?

Great stuff, pleased this will go ahead. Hopefully we can get all runners from all disciplines down to test themselves.

It falls slightly short of the Marathon Talk's Magic Mile event, but I know there will be an official event at Astubury Mere a few weeks early.

Spread the word people!
